Up Helly Aa
Up Helly Aa är en festival som firas på Shetlandsöarna, Skottland. Bevis pekar på att det fanns en tradition bland de lantliga shetlandsöborna att fira den 24:e dagen efter julen, en tradition som kallades "Antonsmas" eller "Up Helly Night". Det är dock osäkert om invånarna i Lerwick gjorde detsamma. Traditionen väcktes till liv cirka år 1870. Sedan år 1880 firas festivalen årligen den sista tisdagen i januari för att markera att årets mörkaste tid var över. Begreppet Up Helly Aa kan vara en omskrivning av "Up-Holiday", att helgtiderna med jul och nyår är slut.
Som en del av traditionen tänds facklor tillverkade av säckväv och folket går i procession genom staden som släcker ner gatubelysningen för att öka stämningen med den levande elden. Längs King Harald Street och St Olaf Street kantas gatorna av publik när alla guizers ledda av en Guizer Jarl marscherar i vinterkylan. En 9,2 meter lång vikingabåt sätts i brand vid processionens slut, Market Cross. Det symboliserar båtens sista färd, mot Valhall.
